Growth Performance Of The Black (BEST) and Red (Red NIFI) Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L) under Separate Rearing Condition

In many species of fish, color influences the growth performance as well as the market price. It is reported that certain color gene has pleitropic effect on the growth rate of nile tilapia and other cultured species such as American catfish, sword tail, Midas cichlid and rainbow trout. Recently, many new strains of nile tilapia were produced, therefore it is important to evaluate the growth performance of difference varieties of nile tilapia existed. Objective of the study was to elucidate the growth performance between color phenotypes of nile tilapia, Black color for BEST strain and red for Red NIFI

Evaluated strains used in this study were Black color phenotype (BEST) from Bogor and Red color one (Red NIFI) from Sukamandi. Growth performance test was conducted in 8 m3 concrete tanks using fine net size 1x1x1m3. Density of was 65 fish per 1 m3 with initial fish size was 5 cm or 4-5 g each. The experiment was conducted for 1 month.

The results showed that the black color phenotype (BEST) has better absolute and spesific growth rate than red color (Red NIFI) (P < 0.01). Absolute growth of black color phenotype and red color were 5.4 ± 0.84 g and 2.8 ± 0.31 g with the specific growth rate were 0.18 ± 0.032 g/day for black color phenotype and 0.09 ± 0.012 g/day for the red color. The differences was significantly since the 20th day.

The black color phenotype (BEST) has better growth performance significantly than the red color one (Red NIFI).
